Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Surgery: Recovery and Rehabilitation

ACL tears are frequently treated with arthroscopic surgery, where the damaged ligament is replaced with a tendon graft to restore knee function. Although the surgery itself is typically quick and performed on an outpatient basis, the recovery and rehabilitation process demands significant time and effort.

Post-Surgery Follow-Up

Your orthopaedician will likely arrange follow-up appointments at these intervals:

  • One week
  • Two weeks
  • Six weeks
  • Three months
  • Six to eight months

During these visits, your orthopedician will evaluate your knee’s range of motion, strength, and overall function, and watch for any complications like infections or ongoing pain and stiffness.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy will begin immediately after surgery, with a program tailored to your age, health, and fitness level. ACL rehabilitation usually spans four to six months and focuses on:

  • Restoring full range of motion
  • Strengthening quadriceps and hamstrings
  • Reducing and eliminating swelling and pain
  • Improving balance and leg control

Recovery Timeline

  • Initial Recovery: Post-surgery, you’ll be observed in the recovery room until it’s safe for you to go home.
  • First Two Weeks: Your orthopaedician might recommend:
  • Regular icing to minimize swelling
  • Using crutches for mobility
  • Wearing a post-operative brace or using a continuous passive motion (CPM) machine
  • Activity Restrictions: You may be able to drive after two weeks, though returning to work and sports will depend on your specific job and activities. Sports participation generally resumes in four to six months.

Tips for Recovery

  • Follow Medical Advice: Adhere to prescribed medication, dietary recommendations, and sleep guidelines.
  • Address Psychological Aspects: Dealing with stress and anxiety is common. Consult with your orthopaedician, practice relaxation techniques, and seek support if needed.
  • Wound Care: Keep the incision area clean and dry, and inform your orthopaedician of any signs of infection.

Remember: Successful ACL recovery requires dedication to your rehabilitation regimen. While the timeline can vary, with commitment and proper care, you can return to your normal activities.
